Chapter 6

Night Flight

“This is the stuff of nightmares,” grumbled a soldier. “There is no point doing this. I would rather be sleeping.”

The laird promptly drew his sword. Before the man could cry out, he plunged the blade of the weapon into his side. The guard’s eyes widened; he slid off his horse and hit the ground with a thud, completely still.

“Are there any more complaints?” Ewan called to the others.

No one answered.

“I thought so, too.” Ewan sheathed the sword and looked around. His men were obviously very tired. But so was he. And if he was not complaining, he saw no reason why they should. Finding his prisoner and that traitor of his son was a top priority. Ewan was not going to rest until he found them. Whether the girl was dead or alive, it did not matter. But Malcolm was a different case entirely.

The laird and twenty of his men were riding through the woods, torches clutched in their hands, scanning the woods for any sign of the couple. So far, they had found nothing, but it was only a matter of time. His son was good at running away—he had done it several times, when he was younger—but Ewan was better at finding him.

But, from the look of things, they must have gone very far. After all, they had taken two horses. One of the things Ewan knew his son to be very good at was horse riding. If they were going to find Malcolm and the girl, they were going to need more than horses.

“My laird!” cried a guard.

Ewan unsheathed his bloody sword again, poised to strike. He slid off his horse and advanced towards the man who had spoken. “What is it?”

“I see something.” The man tried to leap off his horse, but fumbled and tumbled to the ground. He climbed to his feet and dusted himself down, then pointed at something in the trees. “A horse!”

Ewan looked, squinting through the semi-darkness. Sure enough, a black horse stood between the trees, staring blankly back at him.

“This must be one of the horses they took,” the laird muttered to no one in particular. “They abandoned her.”

The laird stepped forward, cautiously so as not to scare the beast away. Then, before anyone could move, he slashed through the air with his sword. The horse whinnied and collapsed.

Everybody else hissed in surprise.

“My lord!” said the guard. “Ye just–”

“Eliminated their means of escape. My son and the girl have no other choice but to go on foot noo.”

“But they have another horse–”

“Which will probably be too tired to walk.”

His son and the girl could not be very far off now. They could not have gone very far on foot. Things were looking up.

The laird marched back to his horse. “Everyone, ye may rest noo. The search continues at dawn.”

Aileen was jerked awake by the sound of a man’s voice. It was the same deep and wonderful voice that she had heard some time ago, the same voice that had made her heart throb before she fell asleep.
